Good Husbandry
I long for the morning
And living things:
To talk of flowers,
A lone, late bee on a delphinium,
How Japanese anemones shimmer at dawn,
What needs dead-heading.
Oh, yes, and the bird-feeders need re-filling.
Details of eating, nuances of taste,
Seasoning soups,
Getting the coffee right,
Candles and open fires,
And jokes about burnt toast,
Husbandry is a good, small word;
It curtains the dark
That hangs at the door
And knocks quietly at our hearts.
