September

See the roses in their second bloom,
Delphiniums gracing the earth with timid shoots.
Late sunflowers piled high at the border’s edge,
Unexpected courgettes spring from nowhere
Speaking of unplanned, salad days
Bowed beneath Stanley’s enigmatic, ancient gaze.

Your gentle care of those shaded glades,
My disruptive drive to transplant,
To start afresh, to forge the best way:
Together we have dreamed and dug ourselves to late summer ease.
